Nineteen year VECC veteran Lin Shaffer won Utah’s  Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) award for Technician of the Year.

Members of the APCO Awards Nomination Committee,

I am nominating Lin Shaffer for the Technician of the Year.
Lin is the System Administrator/MSAG Coordinator at the Salt Lake Valley Emergency Communications Center. Under the direction of the Technical Services Manager, Lin plans and coordinates the operations of the Centers computer and telephone systems, to include Database Management, Network Management, Installation and support of computer hardware and software. In addition Lin is the MSAG Coordinator for the Center, this position involves technically detailed work involving the correlation and maintenance of various computer files in the 9-1-1 Emergency Service Listing and Public Safety Service Database system, Interpreting documents from various sources and verification from maps and or computer files. The position serves as a link between the Geo Database, 9-1-1 Dispatch data and Telephone Company’s Master Street Addressing Guide (MSAG) database.

This position all so provides end user support for the operations division and outside agencies. That in and of it’s self is a full time position with the coordination of all the want and requests for 18 different police and fire agencies.

In the technical support position Lin, must maintain and update the many requests to create the associated nature codes, police beats and fire zones and unit response plans and recommendations for emergency services for the different agencies served by VECC, this requires not only a knowledge of the agencies policies and procedures, but the Geography of the entire County and individual agencies.

Lin began her Public Safety Career in California several years before joining VECC as a Dispatcher in 1993. Lin works hard everyday to keep the systems working, getting the Emergency Units and personnel to the location where there is a need for assistance and because of Lin’s hard work and dedication many lives have been saved and emergency needs handled quickly and safely, and it is all done with a positive attitude and smile.
